Updating the $100 List...

Below is James' original, and excellent, $100 list. I decided to take a look recently and see what I could find for around $100 from that list. Unfortunately, with the vintage craze and new prices rising, the used market has taken a hit.  Some of these seem like great bargains still and have even dropped, while others have risen. Prices are from MPB, KEH, Mercari, or eBay, as noted.

Make and Model Sensor Price Then Price Now
Sony NEX-5/NEX-6 APS-C $100 $221 - Mer (5); $254 - MPB (6)
Sony A3000/A3500 APS-C $100 $220 - Mer
Samsung NX10/NX100 APS-C $100+ $85-$100 - eBay
Canon EOS M (Original) APS-C $100+ $200 - eBay
Olympus E-P2/E-PL2 M4/3 $100 $100 - eBay
Olympus E-P1/E-PL1 M4/3 $80 $80 - eBay
Panasonic G1 M4/3 $100 $80-$110 - eBay
Panasonic GH1 M4/3 $100 ~$100 - eBay; $130 - KEH
Panasonic GF1 M4/3 $80 $110 - eBay; $85 - MPB
Olympus E-PL3 M4/3 $100 $100 - eBay
Nikon 1 V1 1″ $100 $180 - Mer
Pentax Q/Q7/Q-10/Q-S1 1/2.3″ – 1/1.7″ $100 $120 - eBay (base Q)

Good research! I think you're right about renewed interest in some of these models being the reason for raising prices. There may be some more we can throw on there if we dig a little deeper. I was just going off of models I knew at the time. (Like, there are other NEX models).

It would also be fun to make a list of non-interchangable but premium point and shoots under $100.

Happy snappin' 🙂

James,

So, as an initial stab, I went to the dpreview.com search site and selected only "Large-sensor compact" and "SLR-like bridge." I suppose there are "ultra compact" and "compact" cameras that would fit the "premium" idea, but I decided to start with just those two. Then, I selected 8MP or more (with the idea of staying with 10MP or above). That gave me 154 results. Then I started checking prices - I just used eBay as an initial foray. One I had eBay prices, I ran some more subjective searches to see whether the model had generally high internet acclaim (including on dpreview). Posting soon...

This is a start. The problem with this list, given the craze for good P&S and small ILCs, is that even cameras 5-10+ years old can still be in the ridiculous price range. For instance, the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 was announced in September 2012 for $2,800. It still goes for roughly $900. The Canon G5 X (I) listed for $799 in 2015 and is still in the $450+ range.
